Q&A

What is a sphygmomanometer?

A sphygmomanometer is an instrument used for measuring blood pressure. It typically consists of an inflatable rubber cuff that is applied to the arm and connected to the column of mercury next to a graduated scale. It is designed to enable the determination of the systolic and diastolic blood pressure by first increasing and then steadily releasing the pressure in its cuff.

What do blood pressure readings mean?

A blood pressure reading comprises 2 numbers: systolic blood pressure and diastolic blood pressure. Systolic refers to the phase of systole when the heart pumps the blood out into the aorta while diastolic refers to the resting state of diastole when the heart refills with the blood.

How does a blood pressure machine work?

Once the cuff of the sphygmomanometer is inflated with air, the stethoscope is placed over the artery (usually the brachial artery) at the bend of the elbow. As the air is released from the cuff, the point at which the first sound is heard through the stethoscope indicates the reading for the systolic pressure.

Then, as the release of the air from the sphygmomanometer cuff continues, at one point, the sounds diminish slowly and cannot be heard any longer. The point where the sounds disappear indicates the diastolic pressure.

For example, the blood pressure reading shows the systolic and diastolic pressures as 120 and 80 mm of Hg (mercury), respectively, which is usually written as 120/80 or said to be "120 over 80”.
