Defibrillators are front-line, life-saving equipment, and an essential part of any ICU and ICC setting. Defibrillators are medical devices that help to restore normal heartbeats by sending electric pulses or shocks to the heart.
Defibrillators can be used to correct or prevent arrhythmias that are characterized by the abnormal rate and rhythm of heartbeats. Defibrillators are also used to stimulate the heart's beating when the heart stops working suddenly.

How often should I replace a Defibrillator?
Technologies within Defibrillators and AEDs continue to develop at a rapid rate, and it’s important that the technology you have at your disposal is as current as possible in order to maximise survival rates.
The Department of the Army Technical Bulletin (TB MED 7) considers the shelf life of a defibrillator to be 8 years, at which point it is highly recommended that you upgrade as products may be discontinued and replacement parts and/or spares be increasingly difficult to source.
Who should operate a Lifepak machine?
Lifepak machines have 2 main modes (varying by model), manual and automatic/semi-automatic mode. Manual mode is designed specifically for use by Advanced Life Support (ALS) providers, medical professionals who are trained in critical care. However automatic and semi-automatic modes are designed for use by Basic Life Support Providers (BLS). These semi/automatic modes issue prompts to the operator to help them use the system most effectively for optimal results.
